Investing in women and girls is simply Phenomenal
In fact, studies show that women in Nigeria comprise the largest share of the poor and unemployed.
It is said that a skilled person can survive in any environment and as water is very essential to human life, so is skill training and acquisition relevant to humans, especially the female factor (women and girls). A person who acquires skill and is equipped with a combination of resources such as mentoring, motivation, and finance can never go hungry.
Empowering women through skill acquisition will not only boost their self-confidence and image, it will help reduce the pressure/burden on husbands as well as foster national growth.
Sadly, a lot of women who need to acquire these skills to improve their family condition find it difficult to raise the small amount needed to enroll for the skill acquisition program, some because of the economic situation of the country, others- their husband can’t afford to sponsor them and many do not have anybody to push them up for the training.
In the same vein, when these women have undergone the skill acquisition training, most times, they lack the funds to kick-start their business. Hence, there’s a humanitarian call for individuals, organizations, and government to assist with the procurement of equipment and tools at a subsidized rate so they can put to practice the skills acquired.
To mitigate this situation plaguing vulnerable women in low and middle-income communities, a woman with a large heart for humanity, Honorable Justice Oluwatoyin Abosede Taiwo founded a haven known as A Little Sleep A Little Slumber, an NGO aimed at uplifting and empowering women vocationally, spiritually, socially and economically. Her idea is the dawn of a sustainable concept in community development, assistance, and the emancipation of vulnerable women from acute poverty. This, she believes, can be achieved through the acquisition of skills, reorientation programs, business management courses, and assistance projects. The inauguration of this organization took place on the 12th of October 2013 at Christ Apostolic Church, 19 Makonjuola street, Badia Ijora, Lagos.
We are passionate about this initiative because there are many women and young girls on the streets living a life of mediocrity not certain about what to do with themselves, thereby becoming victims of rape, molestation, prostitution, and other ills.
If we continue to wait for the government to right all wrongs, society’s decadence will only increase. Women who have better orientation and exposure are more instrumental to a society’s well-being than women who are not. This is what we are set to achieve – making Nigerian women, especially those in low and middle-income areas, productive.
Together we can make a difference..
